TROJAN ROOTS BOX SET

One of the first of Trojan's 3-CD box set releases that package a good portion of their vast catalogue, the roots set has to be at the top of the heap.

Though not comprehensive (Since it's limited to Trojan's archives, artists are repeated.), this is about as good an embodiment of roots reggae as there is available. Included are well-known standards -- like Prince Far I's "Under Heavy Manners," The Silvertones' "Rejoice Jah Jah Children" (along with a clearer dub version, "African Dub"), Johnny Clarke's rocking "None Shall Escape the Judgement," Dennis Brown's classic "Africa," and Lee "Scratch" Perry's "Words" (AKA "Words of My Mouth") -- but it is the more obscure tunes that truly make this set memorable (I only wish that Trojan would've put some more effort into their liner notes so we could find out more about them.).

Where else can you find gems from unfamiliar acts like The Jay Boys, The Shadows, Truth Fact & Correct, The Sons of Selassie, Lizzard, and The Velvet Shadows? Even though you probably don't know them, believe me, their anonymity doesn't take away from the quality of their work. Although most of this music harks from the '70s, they ring like new in the ears of those many listeners who haven't previously had the privilege of experiencing them.

Disc One contains the most sure-shots -- from "Rejoice Jah Jah Children" to Cornell Campbell's "Jah Jah Me No Born Yah" to Johnny Osbourne's "Purify Your Heart" to the lesser-known "Burn Babylon" by Sylford Walker and "Brother Noah" by The Shadows, among others.

Disc 2 (the weakest of the 3) highlights include "Africa," "Under Heavy Manners," The Abyssinians' "Yim Mas Gan," and The Ethiopians' "Hail Brother Rasta Brother Hail." Disc 3 concludes the set on a high note with "Words," The Mighty Diamonds' "Ghetto Living," Delroy Wilson's classic (despite sounding like it was recorded in a well) "Adisabab," along with the more obscure duo of Lizzard and The Velvet Shadows performing "Milk and Honey" and "Babylon a Fall Down," respectively.

This is crucial stuff; a must-have for beginners and seasoned roots fans alike.

TROJAN INSTRUMENTAL BOX SET

Another Trojan box set, and one can hardly decide between applauding and ripping out their hair. In keeping with the rest of the series, there are three discs, which were obviously sequenced by a roomful of chimps who never heard the songs. It's bad enough when mood and chronology were totally ignored on the single-genre compilations, but this set careens around the years like a pinball -- tempos suddenly shift from frenetic to snail-paced and moods shift faster than a manic depressive. Does anyone at Trojan actually sit down and listen to these sets as sequenced? Apparently not.

As with the other boxes, the liner notes are of no consequence, but at least the sound quality is uniformly good. That said, the sheer variety of these tracks is truly breathtaking, and the box is stuffed with exceptional songs, is littered with hits, and features more than enough hard-to-find gems to set collectors' pulses racing. No matter what listeners are looking for, it's bound to be here, with all genres represented. Want hits? There's "Liquidator," "Eastern Standard Time," "Reflections of Don D," "For a Few Dollars More," and "East of the River Nile," among many others. Fancy a John Crow skank? Check out Joe Gibb's "Fat Dog," an instrumental version of Peter Tosh's "Magadog." Fancy a golden oldie Jamaican-style? Try Val Bennett's "The Russians Are Coming (Take Five)." Want haunting keyboards with a DJ chanting along? Go for Lloyd Chamber's "In the Spirit."

In fact, no matter what instrument listeners prefer, it will be showcased somewhere here in every style -- even harmonicas. Diversity is both this set's beauty and downfall, and one almost dreads -- yet awaits with baited breath -- what's in store for the listener on volume two. ~ Jo-Ann Greene

TROJAN DJ BOX SET

IT WAS NOT until the early seventies that deejays first made any substantial impression on the Jamaican recording industry. Although the likes of Count Matchuki and Sir Lord Comic occasionally frequented the studio to spice up instrumental recordings, by and large, their services were confined to sound system dances.

Initially little more than record selectors for sound systems, deejays assumed a greater role following the exploits of Winston 'Count Matchuki' Cooper, who in the early fifties began embellishing records with smatterings of live and aural effects. Others swiftly followed suit and by the late fifties the practice was widespread, with the deejay's profile considerably raised as a consequence. Despite this, however, it was still many years before they would be taken seriously as recording artistes.

The breakthrough came in 1969, when King Stitt (real name Winston Spark), a former deejay for one of Sir Coxsone's Downbeat systems, cut a series or popular releases for producer, Clancy Eccles. Recordings such as "Fire Corner", "Vigerton 2" and "Herbsman Shuffle" (on which he was accompanied by Lynford 'Andy Capp' Anderson) pathed the way for other deejays to follow suit. The first to do so with any sustained success was U Roy (b. Ewart Beckford). Inspired by the style of Count Matchuki, U Roy had began toasting for Doctor Dickie's Dynamic system in the early sixties, prior to working for Sir George and Sir Coxsone's Downbeat. In 1969 he joined King Tubby's Hi-Fi, where his talents came to the attention of leading Kingston producer, Arthur 'Duke' Reid. The deejay was subsequently brought to the producer's Bond Street studio where he toasted over the rhythm tracks of two of Reid's old Rocksteady hits. Upon release, the resulting recordings of "Wake the Town" and "Rule the Nation" became huge hits on the island, sparking an explosion of deejay releases over the ensuing months.

Eager to capitalise on the popularity of the style, producers wasted little time seeking out deejays to record, and of these, none were more successful than Dennis 'Alcapone' Smith. From 1970 until his move to the U.K. in 1973, Alcapone's output was prolific, cutting material for every producer of note on the island and rivalling U Roy in terms of popularity.

Others to make an impression during this period included David 'Scotty' Scott, Dave Barker and Lloyd Young, all of whom had first made their mark in Jamaica as vocalists. U Roy, however, continued to lead the way throughout the early seenties, maintaining his popularity with a succession of local hits for an array of producers.

Following Alcapone's departure from Jamaica's shores, one of the main challenges to U Roy's dominance as the island's leading deejay came from I Roy. Having first made his mark with a number of systems in Spanish Town, the deejay (real name Roy Reid) recorded a handful of sides for local producer, Barry Mudie and while these early recordings reflected a strong influence of U Roy and Alcapone, he rapidly developed a style uniquely his own. A razor sharp wit, allied to a keen sense of observation empowered I Roy to take the art of toasting to a new level and would have certainly claimed U Roy's throne had it not been for the recordings of Big Youth. Born Manley Buchanan, Big Youth served his musical apprentiship with the Lord Tippertone system, prior to making his recording debut in 1972 and like I Roy, his recordings frequently conveyed a clear, often profound message, often drawing inspiration from the Bible.

As the seventies progressed, a cultural awareness engulfed much of Jamaican society and this was clearly reflected in releases by deejay recordings, which became increasingly sagacious in their tone. Jive talking or nonsense verse were no longer enough to carry a record and the style of toasting made popular by the likes of King Stitt, U Roy and Dennis Alcapone became confined to history. This collection however, celebrates those early efforts from the late sixties and early seventies, when even the likes of I Roy and Big Youth felt no great compulsion to always make a serious statement. What these recordings may lack in the way of any meaningful comment, they more than make up for in their sense of fun. In the immortal words of King Stitt - hot it from the top, to the very last drop!

BLUE MONDAY - WHAT'S DONE IS DONE

If the first thing you thought of when read this band’s name was that shitty cover that Orgy did a few years, please forfeit ten scene points and hang your head in shame. Now that we’ve gotten that out the way, I can tell you about this nice album from Vancouver’s very own, Blue Monday.

Blue Monday play a style of hardcore that gives nod to the 80’s as well as more modern bands. These guys would fit in well on the Indecision Records roster. Their no nonsense style of hardcore, with slight touch of melody here and there conjures up memories of the dearly missed Count Me Out. Yes, this is another straight edge hardcore band, but you probably already guessed that. Still, the music is enjoyable, even if the lyrics don’t mesh with your own personal beliefs. This band is just what the doctor ordered if you’re looking for something angry to let off some steam.

I think that this album could have benefited from a slight upgrade in production. Not that I want everything to be slick sounding and perfect, as overproduction can rip the heart right out of a record. I just wish this recording sounded a little crisper; the guitars in particular come off sounding a bit dull. This takes some of the energy away from a band that thrives on it. I imagine that these songs would sound much better live.

Production issues aside, if you like just about any straight up hardcore band on the Indecision roster; I can’t see any for you not to enjoy Blue Monday. Interesting side note: this band’s label used to be called Stab And Kill Records. I can’t decide if that the most awesome or most hilarious record label name, perhaps it’s both. All I know is that I have a Stab And Kill sticker on my door. Change the name back, guys, come on.
