WARZONE - LOWER EAST SIDE CREW

This is the first ever Revelation Records release and it was also my first ever Revelation (REV) release to put into my collection. Small back-story - Rev was started by Jordan Cooper and Ray Cappo in 1987 in New York. They went on to release the who’s who of the hardcore scene at the time. Over a period of 3 years they had put out over 23 releases, including the first ever Sick of It All release, Judge – Bringing it down LP, Gorilla Biscuits – Start today lp and many more. As this was the first ever release done by Rev, not everything came out perfect. They had to get help from Kevin Seconds who ran Positive Force records and Kane from BYO records. The recording was sent to Kane at BYO records, who also worked in a pressing plant. Kane then mastered the recording and then pressed the record, he certainly pressed the record, but I’m not sure how much work went into mastering the recording!

HAVE HEART - WHAT COUNTS

What Counts as a whole is an absolutely relentless attack on trend-hoppers, greed, and false friends. Their messages are relayed with conviction and sincerity, as portrayed in vocalist Patrick Flynn’s gravelly voice. Although the vocals are relatively unique, Have Heart throw some interesting melodies and time changes into the mix, slightly reminiscent of Youth of Today.

MISFITS - THE LAST SHOW EVER

this was the original misfits LAST SHOW ever, at the greystone in detroit. Download my videos for the earliest misfits video, misfits live 1978 ft. Jerry and Glenn

TERROR - KEEPERS OF THE FAITH

There's no room for interpretation here. This isn't the sound of a hardcore band bending over backwards to appeal to a new audience. These aren't a bunch of guys trying to put in a little something for everyone. There are no games being played and there are no gimmicks being sold. This is Terror doing what they do best; you either get it or you don't.

CHAMPION - PROMISE KEPT

When someone says Straight Edge Hardcore, the glory days of bands like Minor Threat, and Gorilla Biscuits pop in to my head. However that statement is usually followed by someone talking about the newst metallic "Beat you face in if you don't believe what we do" hardcore band. So when one of my friends was rambling on about this band called Champion, and saying they reminded him of Youth of Today, Judge, and other punk influenced hardcore bands, I decided you check them out. After listening to one of their songs on Bridge Nine's website(The label that released "Promises Kept")I decided to pick this album up.

TROJAN DUB BOX SET VOLUME 2

From the seemingly bottomless vaults of Trojan Records comes this very fine collection of dub from the '70s: reggae's classical period and the high point of dub as a producer's art form. One in a series of limited-edition box sets, this set features 50 tracks on three discs at three-for-two pricing with attractive, no-frills packaging. The bands featured include such eminencies as the Upsetters, Soul Syndicate, the Aggrovators, and the Revolutionaries, all of them at various times the house bands for the best studios in Jamaica.

The producers responsible for the dub mixes presented here are primarily the grand masters of the genre: King Tubby, Scientist, Prince Jammy, and Lee "Scratch" Perry. Highlight tracks include the seriously twisted "Casanova Dub" (by the Observer All Stars), "Strictly Dub" (one of many versions of Rupie Edwards' hugely popular "Everyday Wandering" rhythm), and King Tubby's bracingly minimalist "Dancing Version." If you only feel you need one dub collection, this one should be it. ~ Rick Anderson

TROJAN SINGLES BOX SET

Showcasing a decade of the Trojan label, from 1968-1978, the sleeve notes claim this three-CD box set is "an ideal introduction to the company's output." However, this is a rather disingenuous statement considering that a number of the label's biggest stars are missing, and there's few enduring hits to be had within. So once again, Trojan offers up a box that is not really what fans want, yet inevitably contains tracks they need, scooping up minor hits and rarities, the crucial and the disposable willy-nilly. As is all too typical, no attention is paid to sound quality, and a number of the tracks are taken off vinyl, with the Silverstars' badly scratched "Old Man Say" reaching a nadir of virtual unlistenability. For non-specialists, the points of entry are the Maytals' exuberant "54-56 That's My Number," Derrick Morgan's inspired reggae remodel of his ska classic "Fat Man," and Ken Boothe's pop-soul delight "Keep My Love From Fading." Most everything else will draw a blank, although the many names of artists and bands will convince fans to take a chance. Disc one, which covers 1968-1969, includes such small masterpieces as Clancy Eccles' devaluation classic "Bangarang Crash," the Silvertones' harmony-laden "Promises," and two excellent numbers from former Paragon vocalist Tyrone Evans. Scintillating instrumental versions are strewn across this disc and the entire box. Disc two, culling from 1970-1973, boasts a pair of soulful singles from the much underrated Joe White, two songs from the always-fabulous Jackie Edwards, and the Deltones' phenomenal cover of "I'll Take You There." By this point in time, Trojan was moving toward a much more mass-market sound, a style that both the Pioneers' offerings amply illustrate. Disc three, which encompasses the remaining five years, takes this style to its obvious conclusion. It's an acquired taste, but for those who like their reggae light and their production slick, there's a treasure trove of tracks here -- and a comedy of errors. John Holt's "Reggae From the Ghetto" is attributed to Marcia Griffiths, while Louise Mark's "Think It Like It Is" is credited to the former Paragon. Regardless, both are standouts, as is B.B. Seaton and Ken Boothe's "Whole World's Down on Me." This entire disc reverberates with sublime examples of phenomenal vocalists imbuing soul into otherwise lifeless songs. Trojan Box Set: Singles illustrates both the strengths and weaknesses of the label during this decade, and while it's far from the ultimate introduction to the company, for those who want to take a walk down a less-traveled road, the set provides an intriguing journey. ~ Jo-Ann Greene

TROJAN RARE GROOVE BOX SET

A great value box of three discs, each housed within a card sleeve, within a hardwearing gloss card box. Compact sleeve notes on each card sleeve, details some tracks, but not all, on each disc. The years split over the disc are noted. As for the music, the sound quality is suprisingly good. The tracks are excellent, with many not being released on album before.

Buy if you like good music, buy NOW if you like reggae, doesn't come much better. Outstanding favourites of mine are Sweet Like Candy, Medicine Man, Doctor Seaton and Great Great Great [Alternate Version], but they are all fantasic!

TROJAN PRODUCER SERIES BOX SET

For reggae fans interested in the work of some of Jamaica's key architects from the rocksteady and reggae eras (sans both Clement Dodd and Duke Reid), Trojan Box Set: Producers Series is definitely a collection to get. Over the course of three discs and 50 tracks, the mix spotlights the work of Winston Niney Holness (Max Romeo's "Rasta Bandwagon"), Lee Perry (the Upsetters' "Dub and Praise"), Clancy Eccles (King Stitt's "Herbsman Shuffle"), Harry J. (Val Bennett's "Tons of Gold"), and Joe Gibbs (Roy Shirley's "Hold Them"). A fine set of vocal, DJ, instrumental, and dub rarities and hits cut during the golden years of reggae music. ~ Stephen Cook

TROJAN JAMAICAN SUPERSTARS BOX SET

Five of Jamaica's biggest singing stars are spotlighted on this bargain three-disc set from Trojan. Those who came up during the ska and rocksteady periods include child star Delroy Wilson, Studio One and Treasure Isle legend Alton Ellis, and onetime Technique Pat Kelly (really the dark horse among all these marquee names). Each of them is given a clutch of songs, many either classic hits (Wilson's "Better Must Come") or just incredible performances (Ellis' cover of the Junior Walker hit "What Does It Take (To Win Your Love)") recorded during the rocksteady and burgeoning reggae years. And from the early reggae and roots era come two international stars in Gregory Isaacs and Dennis Brown, both represented here by some of their initial hits for producers Alvin Ranglin and Niney Holness. That leaves the great John Holt, who certainly belongs on the same compilation as these fine singers, but sadly never gained the level of fame Isaacs and Brown did. Justice aside, this collection should provide plenty of top-drawer listening for the discerning reggae fan. ~ Stephen Cook

TROJAN ROOTS BOX SET

One of the first of Trojan's 3-CD box set releases that package a good portion of their vast catalogue, the roots set has to be at the top of the heap.

Though not comprehensive (Since it's limited to Trojan's archives, artists are repeated.), this is about as good an embodiment of roots reggae as there is available. Included are well-known standards -- like Prince Far I's "Under Heavy Manners," The Silvertones' "Rejoice Jah Jah Children" (along with a clearer dub version, "African Dub"), Johnny Clarke's rocking "None Shall Escape the Judgement," Dennis Brown's classic "Africa," and Lee "Scratch" Perry's "Words" (AKA "Words of My Mouth") -- but it is the more obscure tunes that truly make this set memorable (I only wish that Trojan would've put some more effort into their liner notes so we could find out more about them.).

Where else can you find gems from unfamiliar acts like The Jay Boys, The Shadows, Truth Fact & Correct, The Sons of Selassie, Lizzard, and The Velvet Shadows? Even though you probably don't know them, believe me, their anonymity doesn't take away from the quality of their work. Although most of this music harks from the '70s, they ring like new in the ears of those many listeners who haven't previously had the privilege of experiencing them.

Disc One contains the most sure-shots -- from "Rejoice Jah Jah Children" to Cornell Campbell's "Jah Jah Me No Born Yah" to Johnny Osbourne's "Purify Your Heart" to the lesser-known "Burn Babylon" by Sylford Walker and "Brother Noah" by The Shadows, among others.

Disc 2 (the weakest of the 3) highlights include "Africa," "Under Heavy Manners," The Abyssinians' "Yim Mas Gan," and The Ethiopians' "Hail Brother Rasta Brother Hail." Disc 3 concludes the set on a high note with "Words," The Mighty Diamonds' "Ghetto Living," Delroy Wilson's classic (despite sounding like it was recorded in a well) "Adisabab," along with the more obscure duo of Lizzard and The Velvet Shadows performing "Milk and Honey" and "Babylon a Fall Down," respectively.

This is crucial stuff; a must-have for beginners and seasoned roots fans alike.

TROJAN INSTRUMENTAL BOX SET

Another Trojan box set, and one can hardly decide between applauding and ripping out their hair. In keeping with the rest of the series, there are three discs, which were obviously sequenced by a roomful of chimps who never heard the songs. It's bad enough when mood and chronology were totally ignored on the single-genre compilations, but this set careens around the years like a pinball -- tempos suddenly shift from frenetic to snail-paced and moods shift faster than a manic depressive. Does anyone at Trojan actually sit down and listen to these sets as sequenced? Apparently not.

As with the other boxes, the liner notes are of no consequence, but at least the sound quality is uniformly good. That said, the sheer variety of these tracks is truly breathtaking, and the box is stuffed with exceptional songs, is littered with hits, and features more than enough hard-to-find gems to set collectors' pulses racing. No matter what listeners are looking for, it's bound to be here, with all genres represented. Want hits? There's "Liquidator," "Eastern Standard Time," "Reflections of Don D," "For a Few Dollars More," and "East of the River Nile," among many others. Fancy a John Crow skank? Check out Joe Gibb's "Fat Dog," an instrumental version of Peter Tosh's "Magadog." Fancy a golden oldie Jamaican-style? Try Val Bennett's "The Russians Are Coming (Take Five)." Want haunting keyboards with a DJ chanting along? Go for Lloyd Chamber's "In the Spirit."

In fact, no matter what instrument listeners prefer, it will be showcased somewhere here in every style -- even harmonicas. Diversity is both this set's beauty and downfall, and one almost dreads -- yet awaits with baited breath -- what's in store for the listener on volume two. ~ Jo-Ann Greene

TROJAN DJ BOX SET

IT WAS NOT until the early seventies that deejays first made any substantial impression on the Jamaican recording industry. Although the likes of Count Matchuki and Sir Lord Comic occasionally frequented the studio to spice up instrumental recordings, by and large, their services were confined to sound system dances.

Initially little more than record selectors for sound systems, deejays assumed a greater role following the exploits of Winston 'Count Matchuki' Cooper, who in the early fifties began embellishing records with smatterings of live and aural effects. Others swiftly followed suit and by the late fifties the practice was widespread, with the deejay's profile considerably raised as a consequence. Despite this, however, it was still many years before they would be taken seriously as recording artistes.

The breakthrough came in 1969, when King Stitt (real name Winston Spark), a former deejay for one of Sir Coxsone's Downbeat systems, cut a series or popular releases for producer, Clancy Eccles. Recordings such as "Fire Corner", "Vigerton 2" and "Herbsman Shuffle" (on which he was accompanied by Lynford 'Andy Capp' Anderson) pathed the way for other deejays to follow suit. The first to do so with any sustained success was U Roy (b. Ewart Beckford). Inspired by the style of Count Matchuki, U Roy had began toasting for Doctor Dickie's Dynamic system in the early sixties, prior to working for Sir George and Sir Coxsone's Downbeat. In 1969 he joined King Tubby's Hi-Fi, where his talents came to the attention of leading Kingston producer, Arthur 'Duke' Reid. The deejay was subsequently brought to the producer's Bond Street studio where he toasted over the rhythm tracks of two of Reid's old Rocksteady hits. Upon release, the resulting recordings of "Wake the Town" and "Rule the Nation" became huge hits on the island, sparking an explosion of deejay releases over the ensuing months.

Eager to capitalise on the popularity of the style, producers wasted little time seeking out deejays to record, and of these, none were more successful than Dennis 'Alcapone' Smith. From 1970 until his move to the U.K. in 1973, Alcapone's output was prolific, cutting material for every producer of note on the island and rivalling U Roy in terms of popularity.

Others to make an impression during this period included David 'Scotty' Scott, Dave Barker and Lloyd Young, all of whom had first made their mark in Jamaica as vocalists. U Roy, however, continued to lead the way throughout the early seenties, maintaining his popularity with a succession of local hits for an array of producers.

Following Alcapone's departure from Jamaica's shores, one of the main challenges to U Roy's dominance as the island's leading deejay came from I Roy. Having first made his mark with a number of systems in Spanish Town, the deejay (real name Roy Reid) recorded a handful of sides for local producer, Barry Mudie and while these early recordings reflected a strong influence of U Roy and Alcapone, he rapidly developed a style uniquely his own. A razor sharp wit, allied to a keen sense of observation empowered I Roy to take the art of toasting to a new level and would have certainly claimed U Roy's throne had it not been for the recordings of Big Youth. Born Manley Buchanan, Big Youth served his musical apprentiship with the Lord Tippertone system, prior to making his recording debut in 1972 and like I Roy, his recordings frequently conveyed a clear, often profound message, often drawing inspiration from the Bible.

As the seventies progressed, a cultural awareness engulfed much of Jamaican society and this was clearly reflected in releases by deejay recordings, which became increasingly sagacious in their tone. Jive talking or nonsense verse were no longer enough to carry a record and the style of toasting made popular by the likes of King Stitt, U Roy and Dennis Alcapone became confined to history. This collection however, celebrates those early efforts from the late sixties and early seventies, when even the likes of I Roy and Big Youth felt no great compulsion to always make a serious statement. What these recordings may lack in the way of any meaningful comment, they more than make up for in their sense of fun. In the immortal words of King Stitt - hot it from the top, to the very last drop!
